Winter Travel Safety

Winter weather can be unpredictable and hazardous for motorists and pedestrians. It also can be deadly. Statistically, transportation accidents are the leading cause of death during winter storms. Even if an accident during a winter storm is not fatal, such incidents can cause significant traffic delays, residual accidents and motorist frustration.

Recognizing these factors, the Commission has established this webpage to better prepare the public for winter travel so they might save time, reduce stress, and avoid accidents and injuries. The Commission recommends that people avoid travel whenever possible during a winter storm event, or whenever roads and bridges may be icy.

If travel is necessary, the Commission urges motorists to take extra care by taking weather considerations into mind when planning trips, allowing extra time to reach winter-time destinations and following simple steps to protect themselves and passengers from harm.
